Redaksiku.com – Universal pictures is officially bringing back the iconic criminal underworld of Miami Vice ’85 with a star-studded cast featuring Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler as the legendary duo Ricardo Tubbs and James Sonny Crockett. Under the direction of Joseph Kosinski, the upcoming feature film aims to transport audiences straight back into the neon-lit, high-stakes atmosphere of the original 1980s television series rather than continuing the timeline of the 2006 cinematic adaptation.
Production details as of October 2026 indicate that the project is gearing up for a major shoot starting in November. With a dedicated creative team behind the camera and a talented ensemble filling out the supporting roles, the movie is scheduled to hit theaters on May 19, 2028, following a strategic shift from its initial release window.
Walton Goggins Joins an Expanding Star-Studded Cast
Walton Goggins has officially boarded the project, adding another layer of prestige to an already impressive ensemble. According to reporting by Deadline, Goggins is slated to play a key henchman working directly under John Leguizamo’s cartel kingpin character.

Director Joseph Kosinski reportedly pursued Goggins from the very beginning of pre-production. Securing the actor required careful schedule coordination around his work on the television series Fallout, where his memorable performance as the Ghoul continues to draw acclaim alongside his past standout roles in Justified and The Shield.
The broader casting list features a blend of established talent and rising stars:
- Michael B. Jordan stepping into the shoes of Ricardo Rico Tubbs.
- Austin Butler taking on the role of James Sonny Crockett.
- John Leguizamo portraying a formidable cartel kingpin.
- Walton Goggins rounding out the criminal side as a dangerous henchman.
- Additional supporting actors including Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, Andrew Schulz, and Edi Gathegi.
Principal photography for Miami Vice 85 is slated to begin in November across shooting locations in New York and Miami.
Returning to the Visual and Cultural Roots of the 1980s
The title itself signals a distinct stylistic direction, drawing heavy creative inspiration from the original television pilot and its inaugural season. Screenwriter Dan Gilroy has crafted the screenplay utilizing characters originally created by Anthony Yerkovich, building upon an earlier draft penned by Eric Warren Singer.
By stepping back into the mid-eighties, the production gains access to the distinct aesthetic elements that made the property a cultural phenomenon. Audiences can expect the signature wardrobe, classic vehicles, and luxurious waterfront settings that constantly juxtaposed immense wealth against extreme drug-trade violence.
Gilroy brings a track record of exploring dark ambition and systemic corruption, notably demonstrated in his work on Nightcrawler. Applying that sharp narrative sensibility to the sun-soaked yet perilous streets of Miami gives the production substantial dramatic depth beneath its high-octane surface.
Joseph Kosinski Brings IMAX Scale and Action Expertise
Following his massive cinematic successes with Top Gun: Maverick and F1, director Joseph Kosinski has proven himself uniquely suited for projects centered on high-speed vehicles and intense decision-making. His distinct approach ensures that action sequences remain clear and easy to follow while keeping viewers close to the visceral movement.
The upcoming feature is specifically being shot and formatted for IMAX presentation. Kosinski is also actively producing the film alongside Dylan Clark through Dylan Clark Productions, ensuring a cohesive vision from development through post-production.
Universal has locked in a global theatrical release date of May 19, 2028, for the highly anticipated cinematic reboot.
A Fresh Start Independent of the 2006 Adaptation
Unlike Michael Mann’s 2006 film adaptation starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx—which opted for a gritty, contemporary, and grounded atmosphere—Kosinski’s version deliberately pivots back to the colorful source material of the television era. This period setting offers a fresh stylistic starting point for contemporary moviegoers.
While Mann’s gritty adaptation has developed a dedicated cult following over the years, Kosinski has maintained an open dialogue regarding his admiration for the original director. Industry reports from late 2025 noted discussions between the two filmmakers, though no formal involvement from Mann has been officially confirmed by Universal.
